I have been fascinated with resurgence of Solid Perfumes in the last few years.
Estee Lauder became iconic with their beautiful collection of Perfume Solids from approximately 1997, every year launching a new limited edition. The packaging, in a compact form was usually adorned with colourful crystals. Unfortunately in South Africa we have very little exposure to these releases. I have also noticed that many women have very little knowledge of what a solid perfume actually is.
What is Solid Perfume?
Solid Perfume is an old and relatively rare perfume form. They are also referred to as Perfume Waxes or Perfume Creams. Historically, since Egyptian times, healing-like ointment was used as a type of Solid Perfume. Normally the substance that gives the cream its base comes from a type of wax that is initially melted. Many perfumers are using bees wax. Once melted, various essential oils are added and then further developed until the cream base reaches the desired consistency. The benefit of many Solid Perfumes is that they are natural. No alcohol is added and many perfumers do not use preservatives. For those that are not able to wear alcohol-based perfumes, this is actually a huge blessing. The current trend is that Solid Perfumes are designed as handbag essentials and are a more compact way of making perfume more portable. Ideal for brides, frequent corporate travelers and for that romantic night out! For individuals that are sensitive to others’ alcohol-based perfume, they will be less affected by a Solid Perfume because the fragrance is softer and smoother. It is practical and easy to apply. Solid Perfumes also provide a different sensual experience because they are applied with one’s fingers. Gently dabbing the solid and rubbing it to warm it up. Apply to pulse points such as the cleavage, wrists, behind the neck and behind the knees. For some, the remaining Perfume Solid is streaked through their hair.
